Parents as Children’s Teachers (PACT)

The Parents as Children’s Teachers (PACT) Project is a collaboration between CREC and East Hamersley and Greenwood Primary Schools in Perth’s north Metropolitan region. It is borne out of a school based need to support children’s language learning before starting Kindy. The Project involves the establishment of a weekly Pre-Kindy experience on the school sites that provides opportunity and encourages parents to interact, play and enjoy spending time with their pre-school aged children whilst receiving valuable support and input from community based service providers, early childhood consultants and academics. The input and support aims to encourage quality interactions between parents and children in order to enhance children’s language learning. The CREC research team are involved in contributing to the establishment of the project through providing Professional Learning opportunities to the team delivering the programs, providing input for parents and evaluating the project. Video capture of parent child interactions will provide valuable data to explore the changes in interactions and the types of interactions parents have with their children. It will also provide data about children’s language learning and development. The evaluation of the project will provide valuable insight for other schools looking to establish similar programs on the school site.
