Writing for All: Studying the Development of Handwriting and Keyboarding Skills in the Early Years

AIMS: This study was designed to examine children’s abilities, engagement and self-efficacy in writing by hand and by keyboard while also investigating instructional practices promoting the development of writing skills.

The aims of this study are to:

  1. Assess Year 2 children’s handwriting and keyboarding abilities and relations between these transcriptions skills and children’s writing and reading performance.
  2. Examine Year 2 children’s engagement and self-efficacy in writing by hand and by keyboard.
  3. Identify instructional practices for teaching writing that potentially promote effective writing development.
