Research Project Brief Description:
The transition of the current power grid to the future Smart Grid poses rapidly developing challenges such as continually increasing demand, higher annual costs, problems created due to the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), and grid instability. The application of Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) is crucial for maximizing the energy efficiency in a distribution network, and the overall network performance can be enhanced by their optimal operation. An ESS can facilitate peak energy demand fulfillment, enhance the benefits from the integration of renewable and distributed energy sources, aid power quality management, and reduce distribution network expansion costs. This research will present the applications of ESSs in a power system, to manage energy demand, achieve optimal energy efficiency as well as power quality, facilitate grid integration of RESs, and reduce operational costs, by optimizing the operation of ESSs. The proposed system should underpin a transition plan from the current power system to a future one.
