The Interprofessional Health Simulation Challenges are centred on a short, filmed case study based on real life events. The clinical scenarios in the short films have been developed in collaboration with industry health professionals and are performed by professional actors. The case studies in the films demonstrate sub-optimal skills in important human factors in health care such as communication, leadership, self-reflection and teamwork.
Skilled facilitators work with participants in small groups to review the filmed case studies, analysing the critical points and identifying areas for improvement. In these sessions, participants are encouraged to analyse their own behaviour, assumptions and practice in a safe, friendly and mutually supportive environment.
A second short filmed case study is viewed using the same clinical scenario but demonstrating improved interprofessional practice. By comparing the two versions of the same case study, participants are shown how an understanding of human factors and interprofessional practice improves quality and safety and leads to better health outcomes for patients.
