Smokefree ECU research

Edith Cowan University successfully enacted a Smoke-free Policy at three West Australian campuses’ in 2012. This framework presents an approach to engage non-smokers but also a non-threatening and supportive-approach for smokers attempting to change behaviour and Quit. This approach required sufficient lead time prior to the policy-change; a health promotion strength-based approach; informed by three-phase campus-users evaluations; and comprehensive behaviour interventions and environmental initiatives. Subsequent research has indicated this policy is well received by smokers and non-smokers alike and overall compliance appears high.

Smoke-free campus environments can be replicated with consultation; empowering the majority non-smokers and responsive-smokers to reinforce the policy; with measures in-place to inform, educate and enforce by normalising non-smoking environments for students, staff and visitors.
