Hands on Training Program

Year 10 on-campus experience

The School of Nursing and Midwifery HOT program is designed to facilitate an on-campus experience for Year 10 secondary school students with the aim of immersing students in teaching and learning environments used in our Bachelor of Science (Nursing).

The program is run twice a year (on the Joondalup campus) with two aims:

  1. To immerse students in teaching and learning environments used in our Bachelor of Science (Nursing) program.
  2. To inform students on the scope of practice of Registered Nurses in society, and the diverse career paths available to Registered Nurses when registered.

Over a four day period, students participate in a number of lectures, tutorials and experience a practical scenario, with a focus on simulation in our demonstration nursing wards. The timetable is structured in a way that students build on knowledge and skills over the four days and consolidate in simulated team based scenarios on the last day.

Knowledge and skills include:

  • professional communication skills;
  • building therapeutic relationships;
  • assessing vital signs;
  • assisting a client with activities of daily living;
  • manual handling;
  • basic life support;
  • simulated advance life support scenario work;
  • simple wound dressings, bandaging, and splinting;
  • hand hygiene;
  • preparing to assist in an operating room;
  • a lecture from a medical physician on working in health care;
  • lecture and group activities on mental health awareness; and
  • midwifery led sessions.
