Evaluating Nurse Change-of-Shift Handovers at a Private Hospital

Monday, 15 July 2019

Professor Bev O’Connell, Professor of Nursing in the ECU School of Nursing and Midwifery, was successful in her application and awarded an industry collaboration grant for her study ‘Evaluating nurse change-of-shift handovers at a private hospital.’

The project will be funded by Hollywood Private Hospital and ECU. Professor O’Connell will work with her ECU School of Nursing & Midwifery colleagues, Dr Rosemary Saunders, Dr Linda Coventry, Dr Amanda Towell-Barnard, and Dr Stian Thoresen, in collaboration with Adjunct Associate Professor Karen Gullick, Director of Clinical Services at the Hollywood Private Hospital.

Nurses handover important patient information to the oncoming shift to ensure the continuity of care. Effective handover is fundamental to patient safety and is one of eight National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (Clinical communication) mandated for the delivery of safe patient care. Research has identified the quality of handover varies substantially. This study will evaluate nurses’ perceptions of effectiveness and identify strengths and weaknesses in the handover process. The outcomes of the study will inform further development and standardisation, ultimately improving patients safety.
