It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Judith Clayden, a former Senior Lecturer in the then School of Computer and Security Science, based at Mount Lawley. Dr Judy, as she was known to generations of international students, passed away after a short illness.
Judy was a well-loved and greatly respected member of ECU staff, whose career defining interest was the lives and work of Library Technicians. This was the focus of Judy’s own PhD research at ECU, in the discipline of History, recounting the contribution made by Library Technicians to the library sector in Australia. A Librarian herself, Judy worked at ECU for over 20 years teaching and coordinating courses in the areas of Information Science, Library Technology, preparation for postgraduate study, and core higher degree research units and supervision. She was a passionate and dedicated mentor, and helped make university study accessible and enjoyable for many students.Judy was particularly willing and able to help people express their ideas clearly in writing, and both students and staff benefited from her gentle guidance and advice.
Following her retirement from ECU, Judy kept in close contact with past students and with academic colleagues, both retired and still working. She was a generous, dedicated professional who took great delight in helping others achieve their goals. Judy’s funeral was well attended by many past and present staff and students, including some who traveled from overseas to recognise her life and her work, and the difference she made to the lives of others.
