Each year the Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research (CMER) runs mandatory training in diving and boating safety for researchers, including Higher Degree by Research students, undertaking fieldwork in the marine environment. Whether a first-timer or refresher everyone is put through the paces with dive emergency drills, boat safety and responsible practice through scenario-based activities in a one-day intensive course. Participants are also assessed on their physical ability and fitness to tackle a crisis out at sea effectively and with confidence.
Members of CMER adhere to a strict protocol in safety when planning and conducting marine research, however, being prepared for that unforeseen emergency situation when out at sea is crucial in safeguarding the well-being of all involved in marine fieldwork.
Thank you to Field & Safety officer, Rob Czarnik, for directing an informative and fun training course.
