The Security Research Institute Summer of Cyber

Friday, 27 October 2017

The SRI Summer of Cyber is a pilot cyber security program carried out in the spirit of the Google Summer of Code. The program provides funding for talented students to carry out research and development on an open source project with a cyber security focus.

The Summer of BACnet will provide placements for up to five qualified students. Over a seven week period these students will act under the guidance of SRI personnel to undertake research and development to improve functionality in the BACnet open stack protocol, with the aim of providing a specification complete open source implementation of BACnet, which can be used to automatically deploy simulated network scenarios.

Project Specifics

Successful applicants will work on site at the Security Research Institute, under the close supervision of an SRI assigned supervisor. The project will commence on the 8th of January 2018 and conclude on the 23rd of February 2018 inclusive.

The successful applicants will work as a team to improve the BACnet(Building Automation Control network) protocol stack and implement an automatic stack deployment system for the generation of network scenarios.

Key tasks include:

  • Thorough review and analysis of the current BACnet protocol specification
  • Thorough analysis of the existing code base, identifying core features which are incomplete
  • Implementation of incomplete protocol features
  • Optimisation of existing network code, as appropriate
  • Thorough testing and analysis of implemented, and optimised code.
  • Development of an automated stack deployment method based on standardised device profiles

Each successful applicant will receive $7,000 AUD in compensation for work performed over the project lifespan.
