Description

This unit covers practical and critical aspects of reporting television news and longer form news and information based stories. These include news gathering, research, writing, production and presentation skills as well as familiarity with broadcast journalism ethics and law. Elements of this unit offer authentic learning through industry focused workshops. Content produced in this unit may be screened by a commercial TV partner.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Make critical judgements in the selection and researching of newsworthy material for television news.
  2. Utilise near-professional level interviewing and note-taking techniques appropriate to a news and current affairs context.
  3. Script news stories and current affairs reports that demonstrate appropriate journalistic form and integrity.
  4. Work effectively in a team to successfully produce a news story, package, or current affairs report.
  5. Utilise the necessary technical skills and knowledge to record material in the field.
  6. Demonstrate mastery of editing techniques specific to television news and current affairs.
  7. Produce and present a news or current affairs story to a standard suitable for screening by a commercial partner.

  1. Learning the particular qualities of television.
  2. Researching for television and deciding on newsworthiness.
  3. Interviewing for television news and current affairs reports.
  4. Scripting for television news and current affairs reports.
  5. Recording material in the field: recording principles, microphones, tape recorders, cameras and note-taking.
  6. Editing techniques for television and current affairs news.
  7. Presenting news/current affairs programmes.
  8. Working in teams.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
