Description

This unit is the second stage of a research project which will help develop critical and analytical skills by undertaking and completing a research project in a relevant area. The project is carried out on an individual basis and should involve collecting, analysing and reporting on data from a small research project. Research projects are supervised by the students nominated PhD principal supervisor, and assessed by nominated examiners. Project findings will be presented to other students and supervisors as part of a student conference for the unit.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students are expected to meet regularly with their principal supervisor as part of the supervised independent research component of this unit. The GRS will also teach into this unit.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have completed PRO6000 Research Project 1

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply problem solving and critical thinking skills and techniques in a research context.
  2. Collect and organise valid and reliable research data.
  3. Communicate research outcomes clearly and succinctly in a multiple formats to differing audiences.
  4. Develop generic skills required for research, including the capacity to transfer across different environments and fields of research.
  5. Apply research findings to extend and/or test relevant theory.
  6. Independently implement an original research plan.
  7. Demonstrate the highest standards of quality, integrity and ethics in the conduct of research.

Unit Content

  1. Knowledge and practice in applied research, specifically in relation to the students research project.
  2. Analysing data and reporting findings.
  3. Demonstrating validity and reliability in research findings.
  4. Preparing research reports.
  5. Preparing successful research presentations.

Lectures, seminars, student conference and supervised independent research.
