Description

This unit will introduce methodologies that ensure successful and economic air navigation over large distances. Position control options and operational calculations to assure safety in an emergency will be investigated. The relevant documentation for planning a flight under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) will be analysed. The IFR procedures, ground radio navigational aids and their importance for flight crew situational awareness will be assessed. The practice of airspace protection and management will also be evaluated.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed SCA1229

Equivalent Rule

SCA2422

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the operational characteristics of long range flying.
  2. Explain the concept of Mach number (Ma) under various flight situations.
  3. Apply the major principles of modern radio navigation.
  4. Identify the essential requirements for safe flight under IFR.
  5. Apply the main methods of IFR navigation.
  6. Analyse operational applications of radio navigation aids used for airspace protection and management.

Unit Content

  1. Concepts of Rhumb line and Great Circle, effective long range flying, flight path calculations.
  2. Mach Number theory, speed comparisons, atmospheric influences on Ma and Indicated Airspeed (IAS).
  3. Radio waves theory, ground and airborne navigation equipment, satellite navigation.
  4. Instruments and equipment for IFR flight, pilot's qualifications for instrument flying, night requirements, meteorological conditions for IFR flying.
  5. Lowest safe altitude, holding patterns, standard instrument departure procedures.
  6. Standard arrival routes, instrument approach charts, organisation, management and protection of airspace.
