Description

This unit explores aircraft performance under varying environmental and operational conditions. Various preparatory methodologies will be assessed to ensure safe and economic flight operations. This includes pre-flight calculations of aircraft performance and loading capability, as well as potential in-flight scenarios. Familiarity with heavy aircraft performance and limitations required by operational situations encountered in the modern air transport industry will be established.

Equivalent Rule

SCA3412

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify airport features and factors affecting aircraft take-off and landing capabilities.
  2. Specify flight operational requirements.
  3. Explain the characteristics of basic aircraft loading systems.
  4. Analyse the concept of Balanced Field Length (BFL) and assess aircraft climb/cruise abilities.
  5. Analyse approach/landing performance graphs.
  6. Calculate heavy aircraft load and trim limitations to achieve the most economic flight operation.

Unit Content

  1. Aerodrome terminology, pressure and density height applied to aircraft performance charts and for obstacle clearance requirements.
  2. Equal time point, point of no return and wind factor in flight preparation.
  3. Loading system terminology, basic and advanced loading systems solutions.
  4. Runway restrictions, take-off and climb segments, fuel efficient cruise options.
  5. Approach speeds, aircraft configuration and runway landing characteristics.
  6. Trim concept, floor loading and load distribution for economic flight

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
