Description

This unit introduces students to topics relating to the aircraft systems used by modern airliners. The components and operation of various aircrafts systems will be analysed, from the more basic mechanical systems to advanced systems used in aircraft flight path control. The main characteristics of sophisticated computer and radar systems will be explored and the emergency warning and recording systems intended to enhance flight safety will be also examined.

Must pass SCA1125

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the functions of the hydraulic and undercarriage systems of transport aircraft.
  2. Describe the characteristics of the flight control, pneumatic and environmental control systems fitted to large aircraft.
  3. Assess operations of electrical and ice/rain protection systems.
  4. Describe the principle of operation of aircraft pressure and gyroscopic instruments.
  5. Describe the particulars of modern flight deck avionics, radio and radar systems.
  6. Analyse the specifics of aircraft warning and recording systems.

Unit Content

  1. Aircraft operating systems, hydraulic and landing gear systems, powered control systems, environmental control systems.
  2. Oxygen systems, ice and rain protection, waste water disposal, electrical systems.
  3. Aircraft instrument systems, gyroscopic platforms, air data computers.
  4. Remote indicating compasses, radar, radio and radar altimeters.
  5. Electronic Flight Instrument System, Flight Control System.
  6. Warning and recording systems, digital flight data and cockpit voice recorder.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS
