Description

This unit develops cross-cultural understanding through addressing cultural issues, with an emphasis on health and culture. It focuses on the knowledge necessary to facilitate patient management for various ethnic groups within the state and nation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the culture and history of indigenous Australians and the contemporary influences upon Aboriginal peoples within Australia.
  2. Explain Australian immigration trends and the cultural groups that have migrated to Australia.
  3. Explain basic anthropological principles and compare their dynamic nature and function within any cultural group.
  4. Select, appraise and display strategies for communicating with patients from culturally diverse backgrounds and/or for whom English is a second language.

Unit Content

  1. Cross-cultural community development.
  2. Cultural competency for health care workers through the understanding of the principles of and barriers to intercultural communication.
  3. Cultural differences through examination of the cultural formation of the person, cultural structuring of relationships and cultural ways of seeing the world
  4. Introduction to culture through the examination of cultural behaviours and personal ethnic bias, cultural relativity and cultural attitudes.
  5. Listening skills and the ability to analyse other personality dimensions and profiles, and to improve professional relationships with others.
