Description

This unit examines the practice of developing and implementing environmental management systems. It outlines the content of an environmental management system and how they are used in business, industry and government. The unit will also introduce students to environmental auditing and provide the scope, content and process of environmental auditing.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Prepare a communication strategy for the implementation of an environmental management system.
  2. Develop an audit plan for an implementation, performance, prediction, project impact and procedures audit.
  3. Critically analyse an environmental management plan and audit plan for an environmental management issue.
  4. Specify and apply the requirements of ISO 14000 and 19000 and series.
  5. Evaluate the information required to undertake an environmental audit for either specific applications as may be required in EIA or for environmental management plans both locally and internationally.
  6. Critique the different types of environmental auditing.
  7. Identify and describe the principles required to develop and implement environmental management systems.

  1. Overview of environmental management systems: evolution, purpose and structure.
  2. Strengths and weaknesses of environmental management systems.
  3. The requirements of the ISO14001: 2015 environmental management standard.
  4. The importance of organisational context and stakeholders.
  5. Environmental management plans.
  6. The potential for integrated management systems.
  7. Environmental auditing principles, approaches and techniques.
