Description

The unit focuses on reading and writing skills that are essential in order to meet the level of academic writing required for postgraduate research in Australia. A major objective of the unit is to improve English competency amongst higher degree by research students. English competency in this unit involves reading and writing in Standard Australian English, in particular high level academic English.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Lectures in this unit will alternate between Mt Lawley and Joondalup campuses, with some sessions video conferenced. Material will be available online.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Read and critically analyse relevant research reports and journal articles effectively and efficiently.
  2. Write about complex research ideas and concepts concisely and clearly.
  3. Communicate clearly using the academic writing required in theses, in the style/s relevant to their discipline.

Unit Content

  1. Skim reading, critical reading and critical thinking strategies.
  2. Paragraph development appropriate to the various sections of a thesis, including abstract, introduction, literature review, results/findings, discussion and conclusions.
  3. Writing techniques and styles commonly used in academic English and research writing.

This unit concentrates on developing an understanding of the practice of research writing at postgraduate level. The unit focuses on critical reading and writing skills - in particular the use of evidence and argument, and how to appropriately structure research writing.

  3. Research writing expectations at postgraduate level, including critical thinking, writing in an appropriate disciplinary voice and style, and making claims for research work.
