Policing Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2018 : Code MAAAIF

This major provides students with an understanding of the broad range of areas relevant to contemporary policing. Adopting an international human rights perspective students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in areas such as intelligence, security, investigative practices, interviewing procedures, specialist policing units, and crime prevention and ethics. Although learning occurs within the context of an evidence-based policing paradigm, emphasis is placed on the practical skills relevant to this discipline area. The major is relevant to students with an interest in criminology and justice, but has a wider appeal to social work, psychology, security and students enrolled in the social sciences or humanities.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Adapt knowledge and skills in the review and production of research and/or policy relevant to contemporary policing.
  2. Adapt knowledge and skills to apply the basic principles of intelligence gathering and analysis.
  3. Communicate knowledge and ideas, relevant to policing, to academic, professional and non-professional audiences.
  4. Demonstrate a deep and coherent knowledge of legislation and practical requirements to successfully police diverse social groups and communities.
  5. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of theories and research relevant to contemporary policing, including intelligence, security, investigative practices, interviewing procedures, specialist policing teams, ethics in policing, and crime prevention.
  6. Demonstrate initiative and judgement in generating and planning evidence-based recommendations for contemporary policing legislation, policy and practice.
  7. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to recommend practical, ethical and/or legislative solutions to issues in policing.
  8. Review, analyse and synthesise criminological theory and research data relevant to policing.
  9. Take responsibility for own learning and development by reflecting on and evaluating practices, communication styles and performance feedback.
