Graduate Certificate in Counselling

Do you want to build practical counselling skills that can be applied across a wide range of settings and client groups? ECU’s Graduate Certificate of Counselling introduces you to the foundations of counselling theory and practice, while developing the interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. You’ll explore humanistic, behavioural and cognitive-behavioural approaches, and learn how these can be adapted for delivery face-to-face, over the phone or online. The course also highlights the importance of ethical, culturally responsive practice, preparing you to support people in ways that are flexible, meaningful and effective. This course is ideal if you’re already working in education, social work, healthcare or human services and want to enhance your qualifications. It also serves as a pathway into ECU’s Master of Counselling, where you can continue your studies toward professional practice and registration.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Communicate effectively to a professional audience.
  2. Critically analyse and apply theoretical knowledge and skills-based practice in the discipline of counselling.
  3. Engage in reflective practice to monitor professional functioning for ongoing development as a counsellor.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 6)

  • Bachelor degree; or
  • Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level

This course has been accredited by ECU as an AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate Award.

Course Duration

  • Students will study 40 credit points in the first trimester and 20 credit points in the second trimester.
