Description

This unit extends the skills of the actor and requires more exacting and greater detail in scene preparation and performance. Emphasis is placed on the ability to apply the process of rehearsal to a transformative performance and understand and apply the principals of standard theatre practice to the work in the ensemble. It also introduces the roles and working methods of various artistic and technical personnel involved in professional theatre. A high level of integration of class work is expected in the performances in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Transfer text analysis and acting technique to rehearsal.
  2. Perform scene or play with understanding and motivated mental, physical and emotional life.
  3. Perform scene or play with clearly devised and discernible character development.
  4. Perform scene or play with the ability to contact and affect your scene partner.
  5. Demonstrate a clear arc of a character's journey.
  6. Abide by Standard Theatre Practice in rehearsal and performance.
  7. Ability to self-assess personal practice and identify goals for improvement.

Unit Content

  1. Rehearse and perform Naturalism Scene Study (eg Chekhov)
  2. Rehearse and perform a full length, naturalistic play for staff and student audience.
  3. The ability to access a heightened emotional dynamic appropriate to the scene/play.
  4. Swift specific thought changes.
  5. Onstage relationships are sustained while focusing on the build of the scene.
  6. Emotionally, vocally and physically play with high commitment and release.
  7. Demonstrate a clear arc of character's journey.
  8. Abide by Standard Theatre Practice.
  9. Ability to self-assess personal practice and identify goals for improvement.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Rehearsals and performance/showing in a studio and/or locations, Critical feedback, including an oral self assessment occurring after each showing, Library activities. Research and development in the field/rehearsal.
