Description

This unit provides coverage of the understanding, attitudes and skills required to effectively manage various types of arts organisations and a constantly changing work environment. The major managerial functions of planning, leading, organizing and controlling are investigated and applied to arts organisations with the aim of identifying appropriate systems that support creative output and ensure organisational sustainability. Students will apply and develop team management skills through a campus practicum.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Describe the main features of the management functions by analysing specific organisations.
2. Devise appropriate managerial actions contingent on the specific organisational situation.
3. Express written and verbal ideas and concepts clearly and confidently.
4. Identify and report on techniques from general management practice that can be effectively applied to an arts organisation.
5. Use concepts covered to determine managerial approaches that support creativity.

1. Appropriate arts company structures including governance issues and the role of boards.
2. Arts company managerial requirements.
3. Campus practicum skill training.
4. Development of language skills in the role of management.
5. Management approaches that support creativity.
6. Management functions and current management practices.
7. Specific concepts and techniques within functions that enhance effective arts company management.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
