Description

Through a study of strategic financial planning, reporting and analysis, students will gain the skills for sound financial decision making within the arts. This unit examines the role of entrepreneurialism, long term planning and investment strategies: financial control; capital management; cost control; project planning and budgeting. Students will also observe and analyse financial management within an arts organisation during practicum placement.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply theory and research through workplace practicum.
  2. Demonstrate high level language skills in the communication of financial decisions.
  3. Develop a practical understanding through case study examples.
  4. Use Excel for financial reporting, scenario analysis and strategic planning.
  5. Use financial management principles for entrepreneurial decision making within the arts.

Unit Content

  1. Decision-making tools for measurable outcomes: SWOT; resource allocation; staffing; funding implications; developing new strategies; comparative advantages.
  2. Financial leadership and entrepreneurship in arts managers.
  3. Primary and secondary research activities through industry practicum.
  4. Risk management and the mediation of the creative process.
  5. The role of financial analysis in strategic planning for arts companies.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
