Description

This unit provides students with the skills and confidence to work successfully in an arts organisation in compliance with relevant legislation and in accordance with the interests of organisations, communities and artists. Students examine governance obligations imposed by law on individuals and organisations, codes of practice that affect arts creators and consumers, and the complexities of protecting Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property. Students also apply their knowledge and skills in an industry practicum that focuses on legal considerations in arts production planning and presentation.

Unit Content

  1. Legal compliance for arts organisations and events.
  2. Australian consumer law.
  3. Torts, duty of care and negligence.
  4. Contract law, with specific application to the arts and creative industries.
  5. Legislation and regulations impacting arts and events: public health, occupational health and safety, liquor, working with children, industrial relations and taxation.
  6. Moral rights and attribution as they apply to the arts and creative industries, including those related to Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property.
  7. Codes of practice in the arts and creative industries.
  8. Legal considerations impacting international arts activities, for example, touring, producing, employment and sales.

Learning Experience

MIXED MODE

On-campus attendance at scheduled classes in designated weeks is expected, intermitted with periods of online learning.

This is a Learning Unit. Learning Units engage students in regular learning activities to develop their knowledge, skills, and capabilities. The learning activities provide each student with feedback to support their development, and create evidence for each student’s progress towards achieving the learning outcomes of the course.
