Description

In this unit students will develop and present a research proposal. Students will develop a range of skills necessary for postgraduate work, including an understanding of the role of supervision, the phases of thesis development, the acquisition of research skills, the processes of research, the management of time and resources, research ethics and the responsibilities involved in research.

Co-Requisite Rule

Only students enrolled in C34 may enrol in this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded CMM5101, HET5101.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Communicate a coherent explanation of appropriate methodologies to address research question(s).
  2. Review, consolidate and synthesise theoretical and philosophical frameworks that address research question(s).
  3. Review, consolidate and synthesise current issues in discipline area that enable students to identify a research gap that could be filled through empirical investigation.
  4. Integrate the essential skills required for conducting a literature review.

  1. How to conduct research in an academic environment.
  2. Management of time and resources.
  3. The problems confronting a new honours and postgraduate researcher.
  4. The processes of research.
  5. The responsibilities involved in research.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
