Description

This unit is undertaken by students who have been awarded a work experience placement. In this unit the student is supervised by a staff member who is allocated as their academic supervisor in addition to a workplace supervisor who is an experienced staff member of the organisation hosting the work experience student. Students undertaking a work placement will demonstrate discipline knowledge, communication and collaboration skills in addition to a proven professional work ethic whilst undertaking projects in an industry setting.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

This is a work experience unit in which the placement is equivalent to at least one full-time semester (or at least 450 hours) of industry engagement. Academic supervisors ensure that an agreed plan of work is executed and in company supervision is carried out by a workplace supervisor.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 unit from CSI5113 or CSI6219

Co-Requisite Rule

Student must be enrolled in a School of Science course

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded CSI5255

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Reflect critically on current strengths and weakness in terms of both discipline knowledge.
  2. Demonstrate effective problem solving, self reliance and time management in a workplace environment.
  3. Demonstrate a capability to effectively communicate and collaborate with other individuals in the workplace setting.
  4. Reflect on their workplace performance.
  5. Implement solutions to the satisfaction of the workplace supervisor.
  6. Identify, propose, plan and design an appropriate solution to the project(s) in terms of a detailed methodology or process.
  7. Achieve the specific outcomes and deadlines as defined by the workplace and academic supervisors.

  2. Communication and collaboration.
  3. Evaluating workplace performance.
  4. Implementation strategies and techniques appropriate to workplace projects.
  5. Professionalism and practice.
  6. Project management and evaluation.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students, under the supervision of a nominated academic and workplace supervisor, will take responsibility for their own learning and professional outcomes through regular feedback with the workplace and academic supervisor and through independent study and research. The underpinning learning process is that of independent learning in which aspects of the work experience are reflected upon with a view to altering future behaviour, including academic and professional capabilities.

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Students will undertake, and be assessed on, authentic activities through engagement with industry and community partners.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This is a Work Integrated Learning unit designed to create an authentic learning experience in an industry setting where students can demonstrate the discipline knowledge and skills acquired throughout their degree. As such, this unit is not considered as part of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) requests.
