Description

Australian literature, including poetry, fiction and plays, provide a mirror for our culture and capture the central concerns of their age. This unit explores the character of Australian literature, with particular focus on Aboriginal authors and manifestations of the Gothic. It draws connections between continuing traditions and contemporary social concerns, including identity and environment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply relevant theoretical concepts to analyse Australian literature in the context of a changing national identity as represented by writers in Australia.
  2. Critically evaluate how works of Australian literature engages with Australian culture and society, including Australia's indigenous and colonial histories.
  3. Research scholarly sources with independence to support creative works and well-reasoned arguments in relation to Australian literature.
  4. Communicate respectfully, constructively and clearly when working individually and with others to engage in coherent discussions about Australian literature.

Unit Content

  1. Examine the thematic focus of works written by Australian authors, including Aboriginal authors, poets, playwrights, and novelists.
  2. Develop reading strategies to investigate the cultural and social commentary of Australian authors in their work.
  3. Close study of the works of selected Australian authors who are shaping the identity of Australian literature.
  4. Identify Australian literature through various thematic preoccupations in contemporary fiction and poetry, including their links to historical precedents.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
