Description

This unit provides an introduction to the use, design, construction and evaluation of photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies for the capture and production of energy. The integration of these energy sources into hybrid systems, including their operational efficiency and economic performance is also covered.

Prerequisite Rule

For students not enrolled in I59 must have passed ENS2160 OR ENS2108 AND must have passed ENS2457

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the design and operational characteristics of solar energy conversion systems.
  2. Design and analyse standalone and grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems.
  3. Undertake a techno-economic analysis of PV-based systems, using specialised software tools.
  4. Discuss the design features and applications of solar thermal collectors.
  5. Evaluate the operational performance of solar thermal systems.

Unit Content

  1. Photovoltaic (PV) technology: components in PV cells; loss mechanisms in solar cells; inverter technologies.
  2. Design, construction and operation of PV systems; integration of PV systems in hybrid power systems and grid connection.
  3. Solar-thermal systems: characteristics of solar radiation; and the design of solar collectors.
  4. Efficiency evaluation of solar collectors; energy storage in solar-thermal systems.
  5. Integration of solar PV and solar- thermal into hybrid systems.
  6. Economic evaluation of solar PV and solar-thermal systems and life analysis.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
