Description

This unit looks at process, intent and context within contemporary fashion, including the progression between ideas, design and production. Students will undertake a self-directed project to apply research through formal processes and construction techniques based on a particular area of interest to develop a fashion collection. The unit applies practical and theoretical skills to promote praxis, allowing the communication of individual ideas through visual language with the specific context of the body and garment for fashion outcomes.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed FAS2301 Garment Research before being allowed to enrol in this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded FAS3205.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Conduct practical and theoretical research to support the development of a self-directed fashion project.
  2. Formulate the research into a proposal that identifies their methodology and the context of their thematic work.
  3. Execute construction skills to make a cohesive body of work/fashion collection that applies their research in formally, aesthetically and conceptually appropriate ways.
  4. Operate independently to a timeline and manage work output to produce a body of work/fashion collection.
  5. Evaluate the theoretical and historical context of their thematic work through associated research and oral presentation.

Unit Content

  1. Writing a proposal and timeline to structure self-directed research and identify appropriate work methodologies.
  2. Sample-work, design development, garment construction.
  3. Self-directed research into relevant designers/ artists to contextualise practice. Critical analysis of works in progress.
  4. Formal presentation of work and evaluation of progress in relation to the proposal.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students work in the fashion and textiles studios to develop self-directed design outcomes with tutorial style support and feedback from the lecturer and studio assistance from the technician where required. Work aims and objectives are outlined in a written proposal and timeline, with students building upon self-assessment and time management strategies introduced in prior units.

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
