Description

This unit focuses on cultivating the practical skills required to develop digital video games, drawing from and synthesising the range of skills acquired elsewhere in the Games and Interactive Design major, such as 3D modelling, animation, scripting, and user interface/user experience design. Students will produce professionally resolved games in a range of genres.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply industry standard game development tools and assets to produce evidence of proficiency.
  2. Develop programming code to extend the functionality of a game engine.
  3. Develop and follow design specifications for a game project.
  4. Discuss and apply techniques for iterative game design and refinement.
  5. Compile a game engine for distribution and play.

Unit Content

  1. Object Oriented Programming (C#).
  2. Graphical User Interface Systems.
  3. Game Design in practice.
  4. 2D and 3D game development.
  5. Development of different video game genres.
  6. Introduction to lighting and particle effects.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Additional Learning Experience Information

This is a highly practical unit where students to further discuss and apply the concepts covered in prior Game & Interactive Design units. By applying their understanding of solid foundation of game principles and user experience design (UX) in practical and functioning games, students will have the opportunity to develop beyond aesthetic-driven games but also playable and enjoyable game.

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
