Description

In this unit, students learn how to influence the 'social good' and implement health-related personal and social change. They examine a variety of ethical and persuasive communication tools and strategies used in health promotion to address health issues, health inequities, and social disadvantage. In this unit, students work together to develop a comprehensive social marketing plan to address a contemporary health issue and showcase their work in an exhibition during the final weeks of semester.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Create a social marketing plan to stimulate behaviour change for a public health issue.
  2. Evaluate consumer and competitive forces to formulate culturally and ethically responsible messages.
  3. Formulate written and verbal persuasion strategies to influence health improvements in communities.
  4. Apply best-practice communication techniques to influence decision makers and target audiences.

  3. Attitude and behaviour models.
  4. Assessing competition to health messages.
  5. Social marketing processes: segmenting, targeting, and the communication mix.
  6. Public communication, persuasive writing, presentation techniques and referencing.
  7. Media advocacy and social media.

Additional Learning Experience Information

On-campus lectures and lecture recordings are provided along with a series of workshops and online tutorials to support this project-oriented unit. Students use a 10-step planning framework to develop and present a social marketing plan to their peers and industry representatives.

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
