Description

This unit is designed to consolidate students research skills through the design and implementation of a social health research project and the communication of findings from this project using contemporary communication methods. Students will also explore contemporary employability skills and reflect on their own experiences of the research process to build professional capabilities.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed HST2122 and have achieved 240 credit points.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Design a health research project on a social health issue that complies with ethical standards.
  2. Apply research skills to implement a social health research project.
  3. Report findings from a social health research project using contemporary communication methods.
  4. Reflect on career skills used during a social health research project to improve professional capabilities.

Additional Learning Experience Information

On-Campus A combination of lectures and workshops that incorporate case studies, small group activities and discussions to support each step in the students' research process. Online resources are also provided. Off-Campus E-learning, peer review exercises, on-line consultations to support each step in the students' research process. This unit actively engages students in the exploration of contemporary social health issues by allowing them to design and implement a social health research project of their choice. Students have the opportunity to explore their chosen issue, theoretically (literature review and methods development) and practically (by collecting data from their study participants). Students will be guided through self study and mentored in weekly workshops. The workshops will provide instruction on each step of the research process and offer an opportunity for students to give and receive feedback from lecturer and peers. This unit seeks to create a collaborative and supportive research environment for students who wish to pursue their individual research goals.

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
