Description

In this unit, students further develop skills in aural training and music theory through studying a broad range of music. An integrated approach to learning is adopted where students sing, write music and play the keyboard. Students develop skills in singing, memory work, improvisation, transposition, clef reading, dictation and harmony, and counterpoint.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed MUS1563 (Classical Musicianship 1).

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Confidently sight-sing diatonic melodies.
  2. Perform competently in an acapella ensemble.
  3. Confidently recognise and produce keys, chords, chord progressions, intervals, tonality, scales, systems of rhythm and harmonic writing.
  4. Write grammatically accurate harmony and counterpoint.
  5. Successfully use the piano and/or music software as a tool to improve comprehension of music theory.

  1. Harmonisation, chord progressions, analysis, consonance/dissonance in part writing.
  2. Sight singing, memorisation, improvisation, clef reading and transposition.
  3. Ensemble skills: Singing in parts, rhythm ensemble skills.
  4. Kodly-related musicianship skills .
  5. Keyboard skills.
  6. Engagement with music software programmes.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
