Description

This unit provides an introduction to acute and chronic pain syndromes, neuromuscular rehabilitation and its contribution to chronic pain control and management. The promotion of occupational enhancement and improved quality of life for people who experience chronic pain and stress with an emphasis on techniques that promote self-management of pain and stress is also addressed.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from OCT3201, OCT3202, OCT3203, OCT3209

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply techniques that promote the self-management of pain and stress.
  2. Apply the principles of neuromuscular rehabilitation for the control and management of chronic pain.
  3. Explain the basis of acute and chronic pain syndromes and rationales for their management.
  4. Use clinical reasoning skills and a client centred approach to promote occupational participation and improved quality of life for individuals who experience pain and stress.
  5. Use quality of life and other outcome measures as indicators of effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions for individuals, carers and families.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
