Description

This unit will enable students to gain Osteopathy experience in workplace settings to develop the skills and capabilities necessary for registration with the Osteopathy Board of Australia. Students are required to demonstrate competence in osteopathy practice. Students also need to develop organisational and time management skills to work both independently and as a member of a team. Professional behaviour and attention to ethical and legal responsibility as well as a culturally responsive approach is required throughout the placement.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will undertake professional placement during the hours specified by the placement provider and that these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks as well as outside standard hours. Additionally, placement days and hours may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed Osteopathy Practice 5 (OST3201)

Only students studying in the Bachelor of Osteopathy Honours (C00) can enrol in this unit

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge and evidence to demonstrate entry level competence in osteopathic practice.
  2. Communicate effectively with a range of people using professional oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  3. Co-create management plans to deliver culturally responsive services.
  4. Apply professional behaviours, legal and ethical responsibilities and self-management skills within an osteopathy practice setting.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students are required to submit compulsory pre-placement documents that show they have completed necessary background checks, training, vaccinations, and medical screens. To participate in placement and to be eligible to pass this unit these pre-placement requirements must be completed and submitted within specified timeframes. Students may have their placement cancelled or ceased and they may receive a fail grade if they do not complete their pre-placement preparation as required. During the placement, students use the Practice Evaluation Form to guide their learning. They are required to keep evidence of their achievements, capabilities and self-reflections and is submitted as part of the Portfolio. Students are reviewed in consultation with the placement supervisor at the midway point and at the end of the placement.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Assessment

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Academic Integrity

Integrity is a core value at Edith Cowan University, and it is expected that ECU students complete their assessment tasks honestly and with acknowledgement of other people's work as well as any generative artificial intelligence tools that may have been used. This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.

Breaches of academic integrity can include:

  • Plagiarism: Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
  • Unauthorised collaboration (collusion): Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
  • Contract cheating: Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
  • Cheating in an exam: Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
