Description

This unit focuses on risk management, the development of practical paramedic skills in communication, interprofessional collaboration and caring for patients in a range of healthcare settings. Learning occurs within controlled clinical environments, under the supervision of clinical staff. Students develop prehospital care skills and the ability to interact and communicate with people from socially and culturally diverse populations. Designated unit: The practicum unit PSP1236 is deemed to be a fundamental course requirement and may only be attempted once unless otherwise determined by Board of Examiners. Failure to pass these units may result in exclusion from the course.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Work integrated clinical placements of at least 120 hours over the full year are held in WA and scheduled in and out of semester across a 24/7 day period in line with healthcare provision. Placement partners may change placement timing and shifts with minimal notice because of operational demands. This is outside of the control of ECU.

Prerequisite Rule

Only students enrolled in K89 can enrol into this unit.

Co-Requisite Rule

Students must be enrolled in or have completed PST1107 (Perspectives in Paramedic Professional Practice).

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify safety hazards and risks to ensure the safety of self and others in healthcare environments.
  2. Communicate respectfully with patients from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds.
  3. Demonstrate ethical and professional behaviour in healthcare environments.
  4. Apply fundamental paramedic knowledge to make basic patient care decisions.
  5. Explain the core elements of patient record management in the healthcare environment.

  1. Clinical placement risk management.
  2. The Australian healthcare system and the paramedic role within it.
  3. Interprofessional teamwork and collaboration.
  4. Transport of the routine patient.
  5. Application of therapeutic communication skills including cultural and social awareness in an interprofessional healthcare setting.
  6. Patient history taking process and documentation.

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Students will undertake, and be assessed on, authentic activities through engagement with industry and community partners.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students are required to complete a risk-based pre-practicum checklist prior to approval to attend clinical placements. They must maintain a placement workbook during their clinical placement, where they reflect and review their practice based on their clinical placement experiences. A placement portfolio is developed to record professional capabilities to support registration as a paramedic upon graduation.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
