Description

Foundation of Business is a core unit that provides learners with a broad overview of the various disciplines and functions within a business and how they interrelate to create value. Key business dimensions such as structure, type, sector and purpose are explored in the local, national and international contexts. The unit will also serve to illustrate the connection between business ethics, legal and regulatory frameworks, and the responsibility of business in society. In addition to the unit content, learners develop skills in communication, critical thinking, research, and the use of information technology at ECU. These skills are crucial for success in their academic careers and underpin employability beyond.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Determine the purpose, configuration and key features of different types of businesses in a variety of contexts at an introductory level.
  2. Explain how the various disciplines, functions, processes and assets of a business interrelate to create value, taking into account principles of business sustainability.
  3. Evaluate the contribution a business makes to society, in context, considering aspects of corporate social responsibility.
  4. Deliver a structured, coherent, professional business presentation, using relevant technology that is sensitive to audience expectations.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit will be delivered using technology enhanced learning, a learner-centered approach. Lectures are used to introduce the central concepts that are relevant in understanding the principles and practices of business. Tutorials provide students with the opportunity to further discuss and apply the concepts covered in lectures and readings. Central to technology-enhanced learning is completing self-directed activities outside of class contact time. These preparatory activities introduce students to initial, relatable conceptions of the topics, which are reinforced through lectures, tutorials and online interactions. Online students: An electronic version of the on-campus lecture is available for students, in addition to support materials specifically for the online mode. Students are required to complete set readings and participate in interactive online activities to discuss, develop and apply the concepts covered in the lecture and readings.
