Description

This unit examines how the body of scientific knowledge has been informed by the observations, experiments and learnings of different cultures, genders and disciplines. The unit places an emphasis on the value that Indigenous People of Australia, First Nations and others traditional knowledge have on the exploration of physical, natural sciences and mathematics. It also examines diversity and inclusion in science, exploring the gender and cultural diversity influences on the pursuit of science.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss ways in which First Nation groups inform the communication and generation of scientific knowledge.
  2. Critically review government initiatives, policies and responsibilities regarding First Nations and recognised diversity groups and strategies using current examples.
  3. Use examples from a specific discipline to demonstrate advancement of science by diverse people and the traditional knowledge of First Nations peoples.
  4. Explain how personal beliefs and cultural norms of communities influence the production and communication of science.
  5. Apply learnings of intersectionality into the context of science.

  2. Conscious and unconscious bias in the development and communication of science.
  3. Diversity - Innovation Paradox.
  4. Case Studies of diverse and First Nations contributions to the advancement of science.
  5. Developing multidisciplinary and inclusive teams in science.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
