Description

This unit examines the practice of developing and implementing environmental management systems. It outlines the content of an environmental management system and how they are used in business, industry and government. The unit will also introduce students to environmental auditing and provide the scope, content and process of environmental auditing.

The on campus version of unit will be delivered through 4 all day workshops scheduled across the semester.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply the requirements of the ISO14001:2015 standard.
  2. Contextualise and communicate the benefits, challenges and critiques of environmental management systems.
  3. Develop an audit plan for an environmental management system.
  4. Relate an environmental management system to other management systems and other environmental management tools and practices.
  5. Understand how an environmental management system relates to other management systems and other environmental management tools and practices.

Unit Content

  1. Overview of environmental management systems: evolution, purpose and structure.
  2. Strengths and weaknesses of environmental management systems.
  3. The requirements of the ISO14001: 2015 environmental management standard.
  4. The importance of organisational context and stakeholders.
  5. Environmental management plans.
