This unit focuses on the physical principles of medical ultrasound including the interaction of sound with matter, factors distributing to sound attenuation and how ultrasound images are formed and processed. Students are introduced to the safe operation of various medical ultrasound equipment and modes of ultrasound imaging. The recognition of ultrasound image artefacts and the importance of quality assurance and safe operation of ultrasound systems will be covered.

In this unit, students gain understanding of the physical principles underpinning generation of ultrasound images and develop the ability to identify image artefacts and their causes and remedies. Students further develop their understanding and skills in operating ultrasound equipment safely from hygiene and repetitive work perspectives.
