Description

Students will gain insight into how anatomical and physiological concepts associated with Sport and Exercise Science are used in rehabilitating individuals with specific injuries or illnesses. Students will learn how the physical capacities of muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and cardiorespiratory endurance affect the ability to carry out daily work, sporting and recreational activities.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed SPS2615 and EBH1101 or MHS1101.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Use digital technologies to access and synthesise information regarding the contemporary management of selected musculskeletal, cardiac and pulmonary conditions.
  2. Communicate the role of an exercise physiologist within a multi-disciplinary team.
  3. Formulate physical training programs for specific populations who require improved physical performance or recovery from injury.
  4. Apply testing protocols associated with movement-related components of physical fitness to specific populations requiring physical training as part of rehabilitation.

  1. Applied kinesiology.
  2. Medical aspects of selected injuries and illnesses.
  3. Rehabilitation of selected musculoskeletal conditions.
  4. Psycho-social issues associated with rehabilitation.
  5. Cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and rehabilitation.
  6. Consultation, counselling and report writing.
  7. Assessment of posture, gait, range of motion and strength as related to rehabilitation.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
