Description

The unit focuses on developing and sustaining sound health practices by adopting a wellness approach to lifestyle education and the development of practical skills which address concerns related to physical inactivity and/or sedentary behaviour. The unit will emphasise the role of specific modes of exercise in the prevention and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases.

Students must pass 1 unit from SPS1104, SPS1111

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the broad structure of the Australian health system.
  2. Explain the impacts of sedentary behaviour and physical activity in the aetiology, prevention and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases.
  3. Identify populations at risk due to insufficient activity or sedentary behaviour and develop appropriate individual or community based interventions.
  4. Relate the benefits of physical activity and apply best practice to recommend appropriate levels and types of physical activity for diverse populations.
  5. Explain and evaluate the underpinning mechanisms and research related to exercise and physical activity, and the role they play in the prevention of chronic disease.

Unit Content

  1. The Australian health system.
  2. The aetiology, prevention and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases.
  3. Individual and community based interventions to maintain the health and wellbeing of the population and sub-groups including; people with chronic disease, the elderly, children and pregnant women.
  4. Benefits of different exercise modalities and participation in physical activity.
  5. Mechanisms underpinning Exercise is Medicine' in the prevention of chronic disease.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
