Description

This unit introduces students to the theoretical and practical aspects of sports coaching and provides the knowledge and skills to plan and deliver effective training programs for both junior and senior athletes. Emphasis is placed on evaluating and improving all aspects of sports coaching performance.

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Design effective training programs to improve the planning and safe delivery of sports coaching.
  2. Compare various approaches to sports coaching to determine coaching effectiveness.
  3. Critically evaluate coaching performance to improve professional coaching practice.

  2. Safety and risk management for sports coaching.
  3. Roles and responsibilities of the sports coach.
  4. Principles and practices which support effective sports programs.
  5. Coaching tools and techniques.
  6. Evaluation of coaching performance.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Students will access and use a variety of face to face and digital learning materials to prepare for and engage in practical classes and learning activities which will develop skills including teamwork, initiative, responsibility and cultural competence.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
