Description

This is a foundation unit introducing students to methods of making and terminology within the visual arts. Responding to set projects, students will create a series of works through painting, printmaking, drawing and 3D processes. Lectures will introduce historical and contemporary artists and artworks for critical discussion and investigation. Methods for exploring the development of artworks will be explored through the generation of three-dimensional models, collages, drawings and photographs. The production of a materials and methods resource manual with occupational health and safety guidelines is a central element to this unit, serving as an ongoing resource for further studies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe a range of materials and techniques for creating three dimensional works.
  2. Identify, describe and apply basic two and three-dimensional artist materials, methods and terminology (printmaking, painting, drawing, 3D).
  3. Summarise basic colour theory and the application of chromatic greys in painting.
  4. Convert drawings and photographs and collages into printed images.
  5. Apply occupational health and safety guidelines.

  1. Introduction to visual arts terminology through historic and contemporary case studies of relevant artists.
  2. Materials, specialist papers, grounds and surface preparation for painting, printmaking and drawing.
  3. Translation of photographs to paintings, drawing and prints.
  4. Introduction to painting, printmaking, drawing, 3D materials and processes.
  5. Induction to painting, drawing, and printmaking studios.
  6. Production of a materials and methods manual.
  7. Occupational health and safety studio guidelines.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Seminars are further developed through structured workshops and demonstrations. In combination with advice and guidance from the lecturer, this critical engagement combined with exploration and experimentation through practical workshops informs the artwork that the student will develop.

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
