Description

Working from studio arrangements and external site visits, students will undertake both perceptual and conceptual approaches to painting. This unit addresses the history and contemporary practice of painting. Students will be encouraged to develop creative personal responses in their image making that are informed and enhanced through theoretical and practice-led dialogues.The program will allow for an engagement with a variety of painting materials.

Students must complete VIS2120

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded VIS2506 and then VIS3530

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Create paintings and drawings that are representative of informed research methodologies.
  2. Demonstrate the relationship between form and content in their work.
  3. Differentiate between different cultural approaches of painting practice.
  4. Discuss both perceptual and conceptual approaches in painting used by other artists to investigate the object, body and/or site.

Unit Content

  1. Art historical and cross-cultural practices in painting.
  2. Critical analysis of paintings in progress.
  3. Interpretive approaches to perceptual painting.
  4. The relationship between drawing and painterly studies.
  5. The role of paint and painting processes in the development of ideas.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
