Media and Cultural Studies Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2026 : Code MAAAJT

This major is at the leading edge of understanding culture, media, and contemporary life. It prepares students for future success in diverse fields across cultural institutions, governments at different tiers, media organisations, and creative projects. Featuring a global outlook and focus on the politics of representation, this major equips students with the ability to ask meaningful questions about issues such as power and influence, changes in traditional media, the complexities and contradictions of new media, the role of popular culture, the implications of technology on culture, and the ways in which social change takes place. Students will gain cross-cultural and international perspectives as they are introduced to contemporary theoretical ideas in relation to identity and society and connect these to real world research, community and professional challenges. With an emphasis on developing research depth, civic engagement and problem solving through critical inquiry, students develop the ability to effectively analyse, communicate, and work with independence to use the tools of media and cultural studies to meaningfully engage with and address the complex social and cultural issues that confront our contemporary world.
