Law in Business Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2019 : Code MABUUT

This major provides a foundation in a range of Law units with commercial relevance, and seeks to support and enhance the employability of business students in areas such as accounting, management and human resource management. Note: While many of the units within this major are units in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, successful completion of this major does not, in itself provide a career pathway into the law profession. Course Exclusion: This major cannot be studied in the Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Business. Note: Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Business with a Law in Business major may qualify for entry into the Bachelor of Laws and may also gain advanced standing on the LAW units completed.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Communicate and convey legal knowledge, advice and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats, using relevant levels of technology and transliteracy proficiency. (4,8,l,m)
  2. Demonstrate in depth, broad and coherent knowledge of the theories, underlying principles, concepts and techniques in business law as a basis for independent lifelong learning. (1,a,c)
  3. Demonstrate initiative and judgement to identify, plan, make decisions and solve business law problems. (5,f,i)
  4. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to recommend appropriate solutions to solve unpredictable and sometimes complex business law problems and issues using social, ethical, legal, economic, regulatory and global perspectives. (3,13,e,h,j,k)
  5. Obtain, analyse and interpret business law information from both a national and international level to create, manage or adapt innovative ideas, concepts and techniques. (6,11,13)
  6. Review, analyse and synthesise theoretical and technical business law knowledge from detailed studies of the legal process, legal research and writing processes, contract law, ethics, the law of torts, consumer and competition law and selected law of commerce themes. (2,b,d,h) 3. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to recommend appropriate solutions to solve unpredictable and sometimes complex business law problems and issues using social, ethical, legal, economic, regulatory and global perspectives. Note: For students completing an Accounting Major in conjunction with the Law in Business Major, those students that are required to, or have completed LAW2300 Company Law and LAW2410 Income Tax Framework, may use those units to replace any second-year Core Option units in the Law in Business Major.

* Students will be assessed to see if they have achieved the ECU minimum standard of English language proficiency in this unit. Students who don't meet the minimum standard will be provided with appropriate English language support and development.
