Production and Design Major

The Production and Design major provides graduates with a focused learning pathway through the skills and experience required to engage in professional theatre practise. The major offers students intensive creative and technical training through professional production practices. This is achieved by undertaking leadership roles within their stream major on the annual repertoire of WAAPA productions across all mainstream genres inclusive of Acting, Music Theatre, Dance Contemporary & Classical, Opera, Jazz and Contemporary Music. WAAPA's professionally staffed and equipped facilities provide the student with the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge and experience the hands on approach required by the national and international industry.

Special Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to be WAAPA Production students only, and have completed an Advanced Diploma of Live Production and Management Services or Advanced Diploma of Music (Sound Production), with equivalents considered.

Production Experience Requirement

All students will work on two or more WAAPA productions. All WAAPA productions are presented to public audiences. The major culminates in an Industry Secondment unit where students will undertake an industry placement.

Duty of care

Construction Industry OHS White Card and First Aid certificate is required.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge and skills in depth of production techniques and creative practice necessary for the performance industry.
  2. Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge to creatively or technically generate ideas in producing and realising performances.
  3. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to identify and sustainably solve problems in the planning, production and realisation of works for the performance industry.
  4. Successfully communicate knowledge, problems, arguments and ideas in modes suited to a wide range of personnel with a social and cultural awareness.
  5. Generate ideas through creativity, innovation, skills and knowledge in diverse contexts to produce and realise works for the performance industry.
  6. Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively and independently on projects and apply responsibility and accountability for own work and learning.
  7. Demonstrate initiative, judgement, a global outlook and international perspective in planning, problem solving and decision making in the realisation of works for the performance industry.
