Media and Cultural Studies Major

This major prepares students for future success in traversing our media-driven environment. Studying this major equips students with the ability to ask meaningful questions about issues such as the power and influence of traditional media, the complexities and contradictions of social media and the ubiquity of popular culture. Particularly the focus is on these forces that affect everyday life. It introduces students to a significant range of contemporary theoretical ideas as well as critical approaches used to analyse popular culture, media texts, media technologies, media institutions and their place in the world today. By studying any of the topics covered in the major, students develop a set of critical thinking and analytical skills along with an ability to work independently and communicate effectively.

This major is at the leading edge of understanding media and contemporary life. It prepares students for future success in traversing our media-driven environment. Studying this major equips students with the ability to ask meaningful questions about issues such as the power and influence of traditional media, the complexities and contradictions of social media and the ubiquity of popular culture. Particularly the focus is on the politics of representation. Students will be introduced to contemporary theoretical ideas in relation to identity and society, and gain a cross-cultural and international outlook, which aims to develop research depth, civic engagement and critical inquiry. It connects with our community and the world by engaging students in current social and cultural issues. Students develop a set of critical thinking and analytical skills along with an ability to work independently and communicate effectively.

  1. Apply broad media and cultural knowledge to a range of theoretical and technical/practical situations
  2. Think critically to analyse, interpret and conceptualise/synthesise complex Media and Cultural knowledge/problems
  3. Think creatively to anticipate challenges and generate Media and Cultural solutions/responses
  4. Use digital technologies and Media and Cultural related literacy to access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from multiple sources
  5. Communicate Media and Cultural knowledge and ideas clearly, coherently and with independence
  6. Demonstrate a global outlook with respect for cultural diversity, including Indigenous cultural competence
  7. Work collaboratively and demonstrate initiative to implement social, sustainable, and ethical values through appropriate disciplinary methods
