Jazz Performance Major

Recognised as one of the strongest jazz degrees in the southern hemisphere, this major has produced many nationally and internationally renowned jazz musicians since its inception over thirty years ago. The strength of the course lies in the focus on live-performance outcomes that encourage creativity and individuality at every stage. Repertoire and improvisation skills are central, and are taught in a scaffolded manner alongside engaging academic units within each year of the degree. All students participate in a variety of ensembles; from big bands to jazz trios, and explore a diverse range of swing styles, modern grooves and everything in between.

Students may be required to undertake study outside of the standard Monday to Friday, Semester/Trimester timetable (e.g. early start, weekend courses, etc).

Learning Outcomes

1. Undertake sustained, high-level independent practice in a chosen music specialisation with reference to its underlying principles and its relationship to history, society and culture.
2. Think critically to conceptualise and synthesise musical ideas to inform creative practice.
3. Think creatively to identity, analyse and resolve musical and conceptual problems.
4. Use digital technologies and music-related literacies skills to successfully assimilate and evaluate relevant information from multiple sources.
5. Communicate clearly and coherently in a range of modes relative to context and audience.
6. Adopt a global outlook and respect for cultural diversity, including an enhanced understanding of the music and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples.
7. Adopt effective teamwork and leadership skills in various settings according to relevant standards of ethical conduct, sustainable practice and professional accountability.
8. Exercise self-reflection, judgement and responsibility in developing artistic practice and individual learning in response to diverse professional contexts.
